Mold spores can cause various health issues, including allergic reactions and asthma. Long-term exposure can cause more severe problems, especially for more sensitive people.

Mold is often found in buildings and homes with moisture problems or leaks. It can also grow around contaminated soil and in basements or attics where water damage has occurred.

Health Issues

Mold spores can be airborne and cause various health problems. These health issues range from itchy eyes and runny nose to respiratory difficulties. Mold spores can also affect the immune system and aggravate conditions like allergies or asthma.

If you have health concerns related to a damp building, it is essential to identify the cause of the moisture problem and correct the situation to prevent mold growth. Using an industrial hygienist with experience in microbial investigations and experts from Pure Maintenance Nevada is the best approach.

Often, mold inspections will include the use of sample collection. Several samples may be required to fully understand the situation, including air sampling and swab sample testing. There are many different sampling methods. However, it is best to avoid DIY test kits, which often don’t include a detailed interpretation of the lab results.

Hidden Mold Growth

Molds can produce a variety of toxic gases, including MVOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). These gases can affect the occupants of the building. The occupants can develop a variety of symptoms, including asthmatic and allergic reactions, as well as neurological and sleep issues.

The most common type of mold testing consists of a tape sample from a surface where mold growth is suspected and sent to the lab for analysis. The results can confirm that a mold problem exists and which types of mold are present.

However, the test results need to be more accurate and accurate. Airborne spores vary significantly in quantity and are affected by daily and seasonal conditions and the type of spore being tested.

Skilled investigators are aware of the limitations of mold testing and do not rely on it as a stand-alone tool for investigating a mold problem. A thorough visual inspection with moisture meters and other devices where appropriate is the best approach to finding hidden mold.

Damage to Building Materials

Molds often grow on or in drywall, wood framing, and carpet. When properly cleaned, the affected materials can be maintained and protected. Testing can help identify if there is a problem and what types of molds are present.

Many different testing methods exist to find mold spores in air, dust, and on surfaces of building materials. However, they only measure a small portion of the total amount of spores in the environment and do not tell the whole story about how much of each type is present.

Surface testing is best done with a Bulk Sample, Tape Lift, or Swab Test, which can identify the Genus of a suspect mold and its location. DNA / ERMI tests can be more comprehensive but are more expensive and require special equipment.

Remediation

Molds produce toxins called mycotoxins that can harm living tissue when inhaled or ingested. Inhaling mold spores can also cause allergies in people with sensitive respiratory systems.

Mold testing is necessary to identify and locate areas of hidden mold growth in a building. This can reduce or prevent damage to building materials and save money by allowing mold remediation to begin before severe structural problems arise.

When a home or commercial property suffers from water damage, mold can grow in places that aren’t visible to the naked eye. This can lead to various issues, such as rotting wood, drywall, and insulation.

Molds thrive in environments that are damp and warm. If the conditions are right, mold can also thrive in air ducts and crawl spaces that aren’t easy to see. To test these areas, an inspector may use a Tape Swab Test. However, this method only identifies the types of mold and does not provide an overall spore count.
