Posthumous Tour For Florida Metal Legends Death

[New York, NY] It certainly has been a busy couple of years for legendary metal band Death, a group that was supposedly buried along with founder and principal player Chuck Schuldiner back in 2001.

Back in February, Sunshine Slate reported on the release of Vivus!, a new 2CD live recording that was to be released by Relapse Records.

And then there was also the announcement on the band’s official website that Perseverance Holdings – the controlling entity overseeing Schuldiner’s musical estate – had struck a deal with Roadrunner Records to allow Death’s entire catalog to be part of a “monster” 14-disc box set.

That particular monster is due to crush the Earth sometime in 2013.

And that’s on top of a slew of recent multidisc album re-issues packed with bonus material such as demos and live tracks.

Now perhaps the greatest possible re-issue is coming to Florida: a live “reunion” celebrating the influential life and amazing music of Schuldiner.

Billed as the “Death To All Tour 2012″ and featuring 7 former members of the group and a gaggle of special guests, this limited-run set of star-packed shows has already wowed the West Coast and Chicago, and is set to storm the Big Apple tonight.

“It was really good … we got off to a good start,” said Orlando-based guitarist Bobby Koelble of the tour’s first stop (June 22) in San Francisco. “The crowd was great … very energetic, receptive. … The venue was really awesome, it was this old kind of historic place.”

The Berklee-trained Koelble, interviewed exclusively by Sunshine Slate, played on Death’s 1995 release Symbolic as well as toured the world with the band that is considered to be the founding fathers of the still-popular death metal genre.

Death

1995 Death album Symbolic

Now he was speaking via cell phone from the streets of New York just minutes before joining his brethren for a sound check of show number four of the tour.

But possibly the biggest show of them all is the final show scheduled for Saturday, June 30, in Orlando at The Beacham. Why is it so special? Death was birthed in Central Florida and was Schuldiner’s home until his untimely passing due to cancer.

Making the show even more special is that it will be the last show of this current run as the last two shows originally scheduled for the mini-tour (Dallas and Atlanta) have been postponed until (maybe) February or March of next year, according to Koelble (although he says that nothing is in stone).

The postponements can be seen as a bad news/good news situation as that may mean that whole crew will fire up the tour buses for another tour next year.

“Hopefully, that’s the plan,” said Koelble, a veteran of nearly 100 live Death shows. “I can’t really definitively say that yet. But that is hopefully what we’re looking at – is another run similar to this as soon as Gene becomes available. He’s gonna be busy doing Dethklok and Testament.”

The Gene he is talking about is in-demand drummer Gene Hoglan, often referred to as “The Atomic Clock” for his thunderously acurate metal playing style. Hoglan played with Koelble on Symbolic as well as backing Schuldiner on 1993′s Individual Thought Patterns.

Hoglan was also instrumental is getting this whole tour together along with a couple of dudes from Sick Drummer Magazine.

“Pretty much the guys that got this whole thing organized … [I'm] happy to be on board,” says Koelble, who is still a professional guitarist and teacher (how’s Adjunct Jazz Guitar Professor at the University of Central Florida and at Rollins College?) that is seemingly always gigging in and around the Orlando area.

Koelble is looking forward to the Orlando show – not only is it where he lives, but he also played his very first show with Death there at the infamous one-time heavy music hotspot The Fairbanks Inn (which is no longer in existence, so don’t bother looking).

“That was our warm-up show to get the ball rolling before we went on to do that festival tour of Europe,” recalls Koelble.

And, fittingly, the shows are a benefit for Sweet Relief, a charity that provides financial help to career musicians faced with illness, disability or age-related problems – and no insurance (a common problem).

Participating in these tribute/reunion shows will be:

  • Gene Hoglan – drums (Individual Thought Patterns/Symbolic)
  • Sean Reinert -drums (Human)
  • Steve DiGiorgio – bass (Human/Individual Thought Patterns)
  • Scott Clendenin -bass (The Sound of Perseverance)
  • Paul Masvidal – guitar (Human)
  • Shannon Hamm – guitar (The Sound of Perseverance)
  • Bobby Koelble – guitar (Symbolic)

There are two guys playing the “role” of Chuck Schuldiner on the Death To All Tour 2012: Charles Elliott (Abysmal Dawn) and Matt Harvey (Exhumed). Harvey was a late-in-the-game replacement for Obscura’s Steffen Kummerer who had problems securing a travel visa in time.

Death

Photo: Death

1995 Death line-up: (L-R) Gene Hoglan, Kelly Conlon, Chuck Schuldiner, Bobby Koelble

“There we a couple of last-minute changes … we had to scramble,” admits Koelble, who says Harvey – who handles the later Death material while Elliott shreds the early stuff – came in like champ on such short notice.

“We rehearsed for three days. It was nostalgic and new and exciting at the same time. We worked pretty hard and had some long days, got  everything together. By that first show in San Francisco we had everything up and running.”

Initial reports are that the both the set list and the overall live show are spectacular. With such an amazing line-up of musicians, is there a chance we may see a live album coming out of all of this?

“I believe we are going to be recording audio at the Orlando show,” said Koelble. “I had heard something about possibly recording video tonight [in New York] – I’m not sure if that’s happening or not … I’ll find that out when I get in there. … What’s going to become of that I don’t know.”

Either way, the legal work and licensing would be a nightmare with so many people from so many different bands (including guest shredder Alex Skolnick from Testament at the New York show).

But you know what? It would be all worth it – Death, formed in 1983 by guitarist-vocalist Schuldiner established the sound of death metal through groundbreaking demo recordings, official studio releases and skull-crushing live shows.

The band’s debut 1987 splatter platter, Scream Bloody Gore, is considered to be “death metal’s first archetypal document”  as well as “the first true death metal record.” And at 2 million albums sold overall worldwide (and counting), Death is the top-selling death metal band on planet Earth.

Will Dwight Howard Be Traded On NBA Draft Day?

Will Dwight Howard Be Traded On NBA Draft Day?

Tags: , , , , , , , ,

[Orlando, FL] The Orlando Magic have cleaned house. Gone is the head coach, the GM, the assistant GM, the director of player development, six scouts and player Ish Smith.

Could Dwight Howard be next?

Esteemed sources say that the superstar center could possibly be traded to the Houston Rockets on Draft Day for two top ten draft picks which the Rockets are furiously working to acquire.

Trading Dwight Howard would certainly be a whopper for new Orlando Magic GM Rob Hennigan. But Hennigan has already shown a willingness to make bold moves and hey – that’s why the Orlando Magic hired the guy, right?

Hennigan’s other big decision is to find a coach for whoever’s left in blue and white.

The NBA Draft will be held June 28 at 7 p.m.

[Boston, MA] Tired of waiting in line? There may be a solution. Want to pay less? Even better.

Travel industry innovator Smart Destinations has announced the release of the Go Select Pass app. With this smartphone app, both residents and travelers to Orlando and Miami can “custom build” discount attraction passes and tour packages while saying goodbye to long lines.

“According to travel research firm PhoCusWright, 60% of visitors still buy their attraction tickets by going to the front gate, standing in long ticket lines and paying full price,” said Kevin McLaughlin, CEO and co-founder of Smart Destinations.

Instead, use your smartphone or iPad to visit GoSelectPass.com and purchase admission to popular attractions and skip the line by “using their smartphone as their admission pass,” according to a Smart Destinations press release.

“Now, you can use your phone to create your personalized, money-saving Go Select Pass while sitting at breakfast on the first day of your vacation. Then you scan the QR code on your phone at the gates,” says McLaughlin.

The only app in the world of this type can offer up to 40% savings with multiple ticket purchases. And it is not only good in Orlando and Miami – the Go Select Pass app works on 400 popular attractions in other tourist-friendly spots such as Boston, Chicago, New York, San Francisco and Hawaii.

Orlando’s 33 attractions include the big theme parks such as Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando and Sea World as well as smaller fare such as Pirates Dinner Adventure. Busch Gardens in Tampa is also included.

The Miami Seaquarium and Everglades Airboat Tours are among Miami’s 23 hot spots. Key West attractions are also on the menu.

“Smartphones have changed the way we travel in so many ways,” adds McLaughlin.

Indeed.

Besides being available on mobile devices, Smart Destinations passes are available online and at walk-up retail outlets.

Harry Potter Paid Off Handsomely For Universal In 2011

Harry Potter Paid Off Handsomely For Universal In 2011

[Orlando, FL] A new report out May 31 details just how much of an impact The Wizarding World of Harry Potter has had on Universal’s Islands Of Adventure theme park, part of the Universal Orlando resort.

The figures are down right spellbinding.

Attendance at the park grew a staggering 29% which translated to 1.7 million more visitors than the previous year, for a total of 7.7 million through the gate in 2011. And how many of them plunked down a five spot for a Butterbeer?

That growth was more than the increase at four of Disney’s bigger parks combined and easily surpassed any other theme park in North America.

But let’s keep things in perspective: Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom was still number one in terms of amount of visitors in 2011 with slightly more than 17 million. It’s growth was only a meager 1% over 2012 figures.

No wonder that Universal is building similar Harry Potter attractions at two other parks (Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Studios Japan). The Wizarding World of Harry Potter opened at the Universal Orlando resort on June 18, 2010.

“The Harry Potter stories are some of the most powerful of our time,” said said Ron Meyer, President & COO, Universal Studios, in a press release issued at the time of the Hollywood announcement.

“We are honored to expand our Orlando experience and bring The Wizarding World of Harry Potter to Hollywood, forever changing family tourism in Los Angeles,” he said.

An expansion of the original  Harry Potter experience  is most likely already underway and rumored to be located in Universal Studios Florida at the site of the since-demolished Jaws attraction, but there has yet to be an official announcement.

Sunshine Slate previously reported the rumored plans back in January.

These figures are co-crunched and co-published in an annual “Theme Index” by the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) trade association and Los Angeles-based management support service provider AECOM.

The report is the leading industry metric, and, “inclusion in the annual Theme Index is now seen as a benchmark of success among operators,” claims the authors.

Outspoken State Rep. Scott Randolph Not Seeking Re-Election

Outspoken State Rep. Scott Randolph Not Seeking Re-Election

Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

[Orlando, FL] Democrats across the state were no doubt disappointed to learn on Tuesday afternoon that State Representative Scott Randolph (D-36/Orlando) has decided not to seek a fourth term.

The end result of this year’s redistricting played a big part in his decision.

“Three-fourths of the residents in the new state House district in which I reside are individuals I have not previously represented,” said Randolph through a statement.

Randolph will instead turn his focus on strengthening the Orange County Democratic Party for the upcoming 2012 election cycle (he is the chair). Randolph also indicated that he is running for the statewide office of Chair of the Florida Democratic Party in January 2013.

“The residents of Florida House District 36 in Central Florida have honored me with their trust and support,” said Randolph. “I have been truly privileged to fight for the beliefs of my neighbors … and to stand against the radical agenda of the current legislative leadership in Tallahassee.”

Randolph has been one of if not the most outspoken member of the opposition party during his six-year stint in state government.

“For six years, I fought back against a radical agenda that continues to shift the tax burden to the middle class, that has shrunk Florida’s commitment to spending on Florida’s students in public schools, and which has led an unrelenting attack on women and all of Florida’s families,” he said.

While Randolph’s vacancy leaves some big shoes to fill, he feels that the party has found a someone with a big enough political footprint: Former Orange County Commissioner Linda Stewart.

“An excellent candidate has been recruited that I know will continue to fight back against Rick Scott’s agenda,” Randolph said of Chapin. “I proudly endorse Linda Stewart as the Democratic candidate in Florida House District 47.”

Randolph has also pledged to help Chapin’s election efforts.

“I am confident that she will stand against Rick Scott’s penchant for gutting public education and the rewarding of cronies with special-interest tax breaks and government contracts.

Orlando City Lions Still Undefeated, Face MLS Team Tonight

[Orlando, FL] The Orlando City Lions remain the dominant force in the third tier of U.S. professional soccer.

Even in the face of tough league competition (LA Blues, Charlotte Eagles) and an even tougher schedule that saw them play 4 games in 8 days, the Lions have risen to the challenges laid out before them.

OK, Thursday night’s 1-1 draw against big-market boys the LA Blues was a bit of a let down, but with tired legs and a virtually unknown opponent, the die-hard fans will take the result.

But it was Saturday night’s hometown 2-1 victory against the Charlotte Eagles in front of 6,821 at the Florida Citrus Bowl that really showed off Orlando’s strength and resolve. The team could have easily buckled, but instead they pulled out yet another win.

Jamie Watson (first half) and Matt Luzunaris (second half) got the much-needed goals in this one. Charlotte did threaten late with a goal in the 79th minute, but the Lions “D” held strong to preserve the win.

In terms of their USL PRO league schedule, the defending champion Lions are unbeaten in 9 games, with two of those being draws (ties).

“I thought that we played with more tempo and did the simple things right,” said Orlando City Head Coach Adrian Heath. “I am happy with the win but we still have a lot to improve on.”

Orlando City Lions still undefeated on the season

Orlando City next faces one of their toughest tests since the team began playing as the Lions last season. Yes, even tougher than their against-the-odds, never say die championship run last season.

They must fly out to Kansas City for a Tuesday night, third round match-up against Major League Soccer (MLS) powerhouse Sporting Kansas City as part of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament.

If City can pull off the unlikely upset, then on June 5 they will host either MLS’s Colorado Rapids or the NASL’s Tampa Bay Rowdies at the Citrus Bowl, either of which would be huge for the squad and the fans. But for now the focus is on Sporting.

“(Sporting) Kansas City has a great front line,” says Heath of the David versus Goliath contest. “They’ll be a real handful (Tuesday).”

On June 2, Orlando City plays an away game against the Wilmington Hammerheads. Catch all the action for free on USLNation.com.

Orlando City Lions Still Winning, Announce EPL Friendlies (VIDEO)

Orlando City Lions Still Winning, Announce EPL Friendlies (VIDEO)

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

[Sanford, FL] On Tuesday night, the Orlando City Lions professional soccer team played the first of three games this week (which will actually make it four games in eight days). A tough stretch for any team.

The Tuesday night match-up was against the KC Athletics as part of the knockout Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament. The Open Cup is the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the United States.

All U.S. Soccer Federation affiliated teams are eligible which is how the Orlando City Lions ended up playing the KC Athletics, an amateur adult club. In the next round, the Lions face top-flighters Sporting Kansas City of Major League Soccer (MLS).

It is also probably why the game was held out at the Seminole Soccer Complex in Sanford, 25 miles outside of Orlando. It was expected to be a bloodbath, and it was: 7-0.

“I thought it was a great win for the club,” said Orlando City Head Coach Adrian Heath.

It was the fourth win in a row for the Orlando City Lions – including two away wins in Antigua versus the Barracuda FC on May 11 and 13. The Lions remain undefeated, suffering only one draw this season (Richmond Kickers).

But that upcoming game against Sporting isn’t the only games against top teams this season – the Orlando City Lions announced before Tuesday’s game that they will again this year play a pair of friendlies against English Premier League sides: Stoke City (July 28) and Nottingham Forest (July 21).

In town for the big announcement, head coaches Tony Pulis of Stoke City and Steve Cotterill of Nottingham watched Orlando City destroy KC with Lions President Phil Rawlins.

Stoke City has roots in Orlando too – Anthony Pulis (Tony’s son) plays for Orlando City and Rawlins is a Stoke board member. Lions Head Coach heath also played for Stoke City for several years during his stellar professional soccer career.

A VIDEO REPORT FROM THE GAME AGAINST KC ATHLETICS:

“This is the second consecutive year that we have been able to attract two top class English teams to Central Florida,” said Rawlins.

“These games give our fans the chance to see international players like Peter Crouch and Wilson Palacios competing against their favorite players from Orlando, right here in the Citrus Bowl. This shows the drawing power of having a club like Orlando City based here in the region,” he said.

But for now, the focus remains on the remaining league games this week. On Thursday (tonight), the Lions face the LA Blues at the Florida Citrus Bowl, and due to the Lions’ unfamiliarity with their opponent, it could get very interesting. Or ugly. Or both.

The Blues have two recent additions to their squad that boast MLS experience, most notably Bright Dike, who is on loan from the Portland Timbers of the MLS. Also, former MLS forward of five years Maykel Galindo has been signed by LA.

“We’ve got a really difficult game on Thursday,” said Lions Head Coach Heath. “I think LA, come the end of the season, will be near the top of the table. I want to make sure we get a result.”

Thursday’s match is Military Appreciation Night for Orlando City.  U.S. Rep. Daniel Webster (R-8/Winter Garden) will be swearing-in 300 new recruits from all five branches of the United States military. Armored vehicles will also be available for viewing.

On Saturday, Orlando City gears up for another home game, this time against the Charlotte Eagles, the team Orlando faced on the opening day of the season. City came out on top 2-0.

“Charlotte traditionally gives us problems,” said Heath. “We will be ready for a tough game.”

Besides the formidable opponent, the Lions will also be battling fatigue as that Saturday night contest will be their fourth game in eight days.

To get tickets for any of the Lions’ home games – including the friendlies against Stoke and Nottingham – call 1-855-ORL-CITY or email tickets@orlandocitysoccer.com.

Orlando Magic Fires Coach Van Gundy, Waves Good Bye To GM

Orlando Magic Fires Coach Van Gundy, Waves Good Bye To GM

Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

[Orlando, FL] It was inevitable, really.

After a disastrous season filled with more drama than one of those Spanish-language soap operas that I can’t understand but somehow they still draw me in, the Orlando Magic announced that they have parted ways with both their head coach and their general manager.

Yes, the reign of terror is finally over. GM and President of Basketball Operations Otis Smith is officially gone, having “mutually agreed to part ways” with the organization. I certainly hope Gilbert “Goodfornuthin’” Arenas gives him a taste of the tens of millions Smith gifted him.

What did he get, like $10 million a bucket?

While Smith and Arenas are high-fiving in the champagne room, Orlando basketball fans are left holding a mess of a team and a heap of unresolved issues. Whoever the Magic brings in will have their work cut out for him or her (but we all know it will be a him).

My shortlist: former President Bill Clinton … Jesus Christ … or both. After all, it will take world-class power of persuasion and at least a few miracles to save this ship from sinking.

The other big news today is the firing of Head Coach Stan Van Gundy. Stan Van was actually a good coach, but he has obviously lost his effect on Dwight Howard and at this point, the ball club had no choice but to can him. His style of coaching wears on players, apparently.

“On behalf of the DeVos Family, we sincerely appreciate and thank Otis and Stan for all that they have done on and off the floor for the Orlando Magic,” said Orlando Magic Chief Executive Officer Alex Martins. “They both brought die-hard dedication and an unmatched work ethic on a daily basis.”

However …

“We feel it’s time for new leadership and new voices,” added Martins. “The disappointment of getting eliminated in the first round of the playoffs these past two seasons played a primary role in our decision, as we feel our momentum towards winning a championship has paused.”

Men’s Health: Orlando Consumes Most Porn In America

Men’s Health: Orlando Consumes Most Porn In America

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

[Orlando, FL] It certainly doesn’t feel like the porn capital of America.

Filled with theme parks and family-friendly fare, Orlando is the top vacation spot in the world. And according to Men’s Health magazine, Orlando is also the number one consumer of adult entertainment media.

You know, porn.

Shockingly, in the Men’s Health survey, Orlando tops such known-for-naughty places such as Las Vegas (#2) and Miami (#12). Yes, Miami – the place where a large amount of porn is actually made – doesn’t watch as much as much as old mouse ears.

The publishers of Sunshine Slate – which is based in Orlando – will neither confirm nor deny the magazine’s findings.

And overall, Men’s Health called Florida … “the most salacious state.” That will look great on a license plate. Are you paying attention, Visit Florida (the tourism promotion arm of the state government)?

How did Men’s Health figure all of this out? They used a formula based on adult DVDs bought, borrowed or streamed, plus the number of brick and mortar retailers that sell porn, Google searches, and, of course, the number of Skinemax, er, Cinemax subscriptions.

Tampa came in 8th while Jacksonville was way down the list at #52. St. Petersburg was ranked 60th.

Is anybody really that surprised? After all, our state is shaped like a giant penis (sorry Pensacola, that would make you the oh never mind).

One burning, sweating, writhing question remains: Who does Orlando send to the awards ceremony to pick up the trophy?

Orlando City Lions Roll Over The Pittsburgh Riverhounds 3-2

Orlando City Lions Roll Over The Pittsburgh Riverhounds 3-2

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , ,

[Orlando, FL] The Orlando City Lions remain undefeated on the season after winning a dramatic hometown match against the visiting Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Saturday at the Florida Citrus Bowl in front 6,722.

The 3-2 victory wasn’t an easy one, however. The first half of play consisted of both teams flexing their defensive muscles. In fact, it wasn’t until the 68th minute that a goal was scored, which obviously opened up the game considerably (5 goals in 22 minutes considerably).

Orlando City “supersub” Dennis Chin had the honors of drawing first blood on an all-by-himself show of offensive might before poking the ball into the net and giving his team the lead.

“It certainly picked up our pace,” said Orlando City Lions Head Coach Adrian Heath. “I was pleased for Dennis (Chin) and I think it really helped swing the momentum our way.”

Except for what happened next: Lions defender Wes Allen knocked the ball into his own net in the 79th minute, which is the first own goal ever allowed by the young Lions team. Oops. Not exactly a scrap book moment.

Now tied up at 1-1, both teams felt the pressure to get the win, scoring 3 goals in 11 minutes of regulation plus stoppage time. The game also got a bit rougher with yellow cards flying (after the game, the Riverhounds’ coach even got a red card).

80th minute: goal for Orlando (Charlie Campbell). 85th minute: goal for Pittsburgh (Matt Kassal).

The winner came in the 88th minute courtesy of Lions midfielder Ian Fuller, who topped his assist earlier in the game with a successful strike that secured his team the win.

“I think we responded well tonight,” Fuller said. “I know defensively we can fix a few things but we’ll take the win.”

The Orlando City Lions are now 4-0-1 on the season. Next up: a pair of away matches against Antigua Barracuda FC on Friday and Sunday.

Game 4: Orlando Magic Comeback Spoiled In OT By Pacers

Game 4: Orlando Magic Comeback Spoiled In OT By Pacers

Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

[Orlando, FL] You certainly couldn’t fault the effort by the Orlando Magic in Game 4. The hometown squad was being outplayed by the bigger and more talented Indiana Pacers.

But through sheer desire, guts and determination the Magic came back (quite improbably) from a 19-point deficit to take this one into OT, where they ran out of steam and lost 101-99. They are now down three games to one in this series.

“Every loose ball we were on, (for) every rebound, we boxed out, every defensive possession. I haven’t felt this sense of urgency since the first game,” said Glen “Big Baby” Davis after the game. “With our backs against the wall we fought really, really hard.”

But fighting hard doesn’t win you championships, only the respect of fans, TV announcers and your coach.

Orlando certainly had a chance to win it at the end of regulation. With 14.7 seconds remaining, Magic point guard Jameer Nelson dribbled out the clock and launched a 14-footer that fell short, effectively killing the team’s momentum and giving the Pacers a chance to right the ship in overtime.

More than one person thought that he should have shoveled the rock down low to Davis, who was lighting up the scoreboard all night (he finished with 24 points).

“He could have thrown the ball into Glen in the paint, but once he didn’t do that, I thought he timed everything perfectly,” said Magic Head Coach Stan Van Gundy. It’s a move he makes a lot, that reverse pivot.”

Van Gundy blames fatigue for the missed shot, which would have evened the series at 2-2 and completely changed the dynamic of their situation.

“He just didn’t get his legs under him or he was too tired to get the ball up, but he had separation from the defense; it’s not like the defense was hanging on him,” said Stan.

Magic forward Ryan Anderson – who was named the NBA’s Most Improved Player for 2011-2012  on Friday – still only managed 11 points in yet another underwhelming performance.

Add to that stat the fact that the bench went 3-for-15 and you can see why the pinstripes are struggling to get wins against Indiana. Another disappearing act from earlier in the series – Magic scorer Jason Richardson – finally came alive, netting a team high 25 points to no avail.

Game 5 is on Tuesday back in Indiana.

Game 3: Indiana Pacers Blow-Out Orlando Magic 97-74

Game 3: Indiana Pacers Blow-Out Orlando Magic 97-74

[Orlando, FL] Orlando has seen the future without Dwight Howard and the future is not so bright. In fact, it is post-apocalyptically bleak.

Things are so horrific for the Orlando Magic that Stephen King is now being considered for the general manager’s position.

In their Wednesday night Game 3 match-up against the Indiana Pacers, the boys in blue and white showed why Howard is such a big part of their success. Without D-12 the team is outsized and unable to execute the type of defense needed to win against the likes of Indiana.

And Indiana isn’t even that great of a team when compared to Miami or Chicago.

Consequently, Game 3 was ugly. 97-74 ugly. It was the type of blow-out affair on the Magic’s home court that dashes hopes and shatters dreams. By the looks of it, Indiana will most likely win Game 4 and Game 5 and close out the best-of-seven series.

“They clearly dominated us tonight, particularly at the start of the game and then in the third quarter again, and that’s three first quarters and three third quarters where it’s been the same story,” said Orlando Magic Head Coach Stan Van Gundy after his team took the beating.

“So we’ll take a look at that and see if we want to make some changes or something. We can’t be playing out of a hole all the time,” he said.

So far, Magic sharpshooter Ryan Anderson – he’s the NBA’s top 3-point expert – has been nonexistent against Indiana. With only one real scorer to worry about, Indiana has been able to easily shut him down and keep him from getting any rhythm going.

Anderson is averaging only 7.7 points per game against Indiana in the series and shooting a paltry 33% from behind the three-point arc. And this is a guy who was crushing it during the season, averaging 16.1 ppg.

Note to Stan: Super size. Put all of your bigs out there to shake them up, it is your only chance. And hope somebody makes a shot.

Indiana now leads the series 2-1. Game 4 is Saturday at 4 p.m. Wear your best bloodbath outfit.

Game 2: Orlando Magic Falls Apart In 3Q, Indiana Gets Win

Game 2: Orlando Magic Falls Apart In 3Q, Indiana Gets Win

[Indianapolis, IN] The somewhat improbable victory for the Dwight Howard-less Orlando Magic in Game 1 was a triumph for the series underdogs. Well, the Indiana Pacers proved why they are the chosen ones in this series in Monday night’s Game 2 match-up.

Indiana Pacers 93, Orlando Magic 78. The series is now tied up 1-1.

The Magic men did hold their own in the first half and the start of the third quarter behind yet another star turn by center Glen “Big Baby” Davis, who pulled down 6 rebounds and kept the home team at bay in the paint. Davis finished the game with 18 points, a team high.

But by the second half, Indiana’s offense started to sizzle (finally) to complement their tough-as-nails defense. In fact, Indiana kept Orlando to 35% shooting from the field for the game, which will not get it done in this series (or any other for that matter).

“We’re going to have to be better offensively,” said Magic Head Coach Stan Van Gundy. “I’m going to have to find something that works.”

Yes, he is. Plus the guys have to shoot better. Orlando’s Jason Richardson went 1-for-5, Jameer Nelson shot 4-for-13 and Davis 5-of-16. Ryan Anderson also continued to struggle, this time it was with fouls – he only stayed on the court for 11 minutes in the second half.

“Obviously we have a lot of scorers on this team and we thought we’d get it going, but we never did,” offered Anderson post-game, as reported by Orlando Magic scribe John Denton. “Their momentum was just greater than ours, they fought harder and they made more hustle plays.”

Orlando’s gritty shooting guard J.J. Redick – who had 12 points in 25 minutes of play – sees the need for a little shake-up of the game plan, as the last one didn’t work too well.

“You have to be happy that you got one (win) on the road, but I don’t think that’s a good frame of mind to be in,” said Redick. “We have to make our adjustments, both Xs and Os and with what we bring to the game on Wednesday night.”

Oh, yes, Wednesday night. The series moves to Orlando for Game 2 on Wednesday and Game 3 on Saturday. Both will be seen as must-win if the pinstripes hope to pull off the upset in this series and face (what looks to be) the Miami Heat in the next round.

George Zimmerman Back Online, Facebook & Twitter Too

George Zimmerman Back Online, Facebook & Twitter Too

Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

[Orlando, FL] Can’t get enough of George Zimmerman? Want to learn about the details of his defense? Want to post something you may regret later? It is all available to you online via websites and social media.

That’s right, the Orlando-based legal team defending the man charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Sanford in February has launched two websites, a Facebook page and a Twitter account (links below).

Why? We’ll let Zimmerman’s attorney Mark O’Mara’s explain. They understand.

“We understand that it is unusual for a legal defense to maintain a social media presence on behalf of a defendant,” said the web-savvy lawyer. “We do understand and acknowledge the criticism that this is an opportunistic move using the event of a tragedy for personal or firm gain.”

“We contend that social media in this day and age cannot be ignored,” said O’Mara on the website.

Still feeling a little uneasy about all of this? Here are the reasons for the web presence, as spelled out on http://gzlegalcase.com/:

  • Discrediting and Eliminating Fraudulent Websites and Social Profiles
  • Disputing Misinformation
  • Discouraging Speculation
  • Acknowledging The Larger Significance of the Case
  • Providing a Forum for Communication with the Law Firm
  • Providing a Voice for Mr. Zimmerman
  • Raising Funds

Notice I used “bullet points”?

Sunshine Slate reported a few weeks back that George Zimmerman (GZ) had launched his own website to do exactly the same thing – teach, explain and to raise money. He actually raised more than $200,000, which became an issue in court.

That site swas shut down by O’Mara when he took over GZ’s defense.

The new sites are already getting a lot of activity, too. The GeorgeZimmermanLegalCase Facebook page already had 1,038 likes as of 5:10 p.m. on Monday, April 30. The “GZ” Twitter feed – found here – had 762 followers at roughly the same time.

The fourth site – the George Zimmerman Defense Fund – is not yet functional, but O’Mara promises to have it up real soon. Just follow that Twitter feed for more info.

Of course, social media also opens up the possibility of people posting messages like this one from Facebooker “Washington Roger”:

“I hope that the legal system crushes you to a pulp you give all legal professionals a bad name.”

Orlando City Lions Play Tough Richmond Kickers To A Draw

Orlando City Lions Play Tough Richmond Kickers To A Draw

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

[Orlando, FL] After Saturday night’s game against the visiting Richmond Kickers, the Orlando City Lions remain unbeaten on the season. But it wasn’t easy, despite the fact that they already beat the Kickers once this season 2-0.

Richmond came to play in this one, and dominated the first half in front of 7,899 anxious fans at the Florida Citrus Bowl. Shots reigned in at Lions keeper Miguel Gallardo, who pretty much saved the draw for Orlando by stopping eight shots in the first half.

Gallardo did not return for the second half as he suffered a concussion in the first. Or was it shell shock?

The Lions’ fortunes changed in the second half after an aggressive substitution by Head Coach Adrian Heath brought four fresh footballers onto the field. Consequently, the Lions started to take over and press Richmond’s goal, but to no avail.

That is until the game clock hit 90 minutes and Kevin Molino‘s corner kick dropped right in front of the Kickers’ goal. After a little pinball wizardry, the ball was safely cleared from the area.

The game ended in a scoreless draw.

“Offensively we didn’t have too much life tonight,” said Heath. “I’m disappointed that we didn’t grab the win but a draw is a draw. We can do better than this.”

The Orlando City Lions are now 3-0-1 on the season. The team’s next game is Saturday, May 5, against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds at the Florida Citrus Bowl. Get tickets by calling (855) ORL-CITY or by visiting the team’s website here.

Alumni report: Former Orlando City Lions stand-out Lewis Neal has signed with Major League Soccer (MLS) team D.C. United.

“Lewis will provide us solid cover for us at a number of positions,” said United General Manager Dave Kasper via press release. “We look forward to his future contributions to the club.”

Other Lions alumni also roaring in the MLS: Yordany Alvarez (Real Salt Lake) and Lawrence Olum (Sporting Kansas City).

Game 1: Orlando Magic Surprise Pacers, Get Win On Road

Game 1: Orlando Magic Surprise Pacers, Get Win On Road

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

[Indianapolis, IN] Coming into Game 1, the Orlando Magic were the underdogs against the late-season charging Indiana Pacers.

It wasn’t supposed to be like this, but with Orlando’s superstar center Dwight Howard out for the season with a back injury (he just had surgery), the tables have turned the possible contenders into also-rans. It would be up to Glen “Big Baby” Davis to fill Howard’s massive shoes in the middle.

In reality, it was Orlando’s scrappy, never-say-die attitude and aggressive three-point shooting (9-of-24) that proved to be the difference. That and the fact that Indiana couldn’t make their free throws (they shot under 60%, pathetic by pro standards).

Still, the Pacers had a chance to win this one. With the scoreboard reading 80-77 and with 10.3 seconds left on the clock, they called for a timeout. On the inbound play, go-to scorer Danny Granger got the ball and prepared to launch a three. But he was called for traveling.

Traveling? Missing free throws? Pacers legend Larry Bird must be turning over in his grave. Wait. What? He’s still alive?

The good guys ended up winning 81-77.

Possibly the most improbable thing about the victory is that the Orlando Magic’s ace sharpshooter Ryan Anderson only managed four points. If Anderson can break free and get hot in this series, the Magic may actually have a chance in pulling off the upset.

“Even in games we haven’t played well, I think our guys never quit fighting. Our goal is to hang in there,” said Magic Head Coach Stan Van Gundy after the game.

Hanging in there, indeed.

Though he was outsized by Indiana center Roy Hibbert by 5 inches, Davis played a great game, managing 16 points, 13 rebounds and 3 blocks in 40 minutes of play. And all of that on a sore ankle!

“We’re not trying to impress the doubters or make them believe in us. We believe in ourselves. We’ve been through a lot this year, both mentally and physically. And we have been able to overcome it. This is huge to get Game 1 at their place,” said Davis after the game.

Other Magicians stepped up in this game as well, including dribbling puppy dog Earl Clark who battled Indiana’s big men for 19.5 minutes. Clark did well, scoring 6 points, pulling down 9 rebounds and swatting away four shots. Puppy power!

The Orlando Magic lead the first-round playoff series against the Indiana Pacers 1-0. Game 2 is Monday night.

George Zimmerman Takes Down Website, Made $200k

[Orlando, FL] The website George Zimmerman had launched to help finance his defense has been taken down at the request of his new legal team.

“This website’s sole purpose is to ensure my supporters they are receiving my full attention without any intermediaries,” Zimmerman said on the site, as reported by Sunshine Slate on April 12.

“Any and all words of support and kindness will be read and appreciated, every attempt to reply to my supporters will be made personally.”

There was a PayPal button to throw some green Zimmerman’s way, if you were so inclined.

Zimmerman, who is charged with second-degree murder for fatally shooting unarmed teen Trayvon Martin in Sanford back in February, launched therealgeorgezimmerman.com as public pressure on authorities mounted and social tensions were running at their highest.

George Zimmerman is claiming self defense. The trial will be followed by tens of millions.

So, how did the site do, anyway?

During a TV interview on Thursday on CNN, Zimmerman attorney Mark O’Mara indicated that his client raised more than $200,000 through the website before it was taken down.

Orlando Magic Mauled By Grizzlies, SVG Hates Playoff Schedule

Orlando Magic Mauled By Grizzlies, SVG Hates Playoff Schedule

Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

[Memphis, TN] The Orlando Magic rested most of their starters on Thursday night in their final regular-season game against the Memphis Grizzlies. Also sitting this one out was Glen “Big Baby” Davis, who was nursing a sprained ankle.

Consequently, the visiting Magic men fell to their hosts 88-76.

The game was notable, however, for the return of Hedo Turkoglu (pictured with his new face mask), who had missed the previous 10 games with a messed up face but was able to pour in 18 points in his comeback effort.

But the Magic are now looking ahead to this weekend as their playoff schedule has been unveiled. They face the Indiana Pacers in the first round of a best-of-seven playoff series. And it starts Saturday.

  • Game 1 – Saturday, April 28 @ Indiana, 7 p.m. (ESPN)
  • Game 2 – Monday, April 30 @ Indiana, 7:30 p.m. (NBA TV)
  • Game 3 – Wednesday, May 2 @ Orlando, 7:30 p.m. (NBA TV)
  • Game 4 – Saturday, May 5 @ Orlando, 2 p.m. (ESPN)
  • Game 5 – Tuesday, May 8 @ Indiana, TBD (TBD)
  • Game 6 – Friday, May 11 @ Orlando, TBD (TBD)
  • Game 7 – Sunday, May 13 @ Indiana, TBD (TBD)

Orlando Magic Head Coach Stan Van Gundy is not very psyched about it. The schedule, that is.

“It’s a really quick turnaround. We don’t have much preparation time. Some of the guys that we need to play (Saturday) had to play minutes tonight, so we’ll really have to think about how much we can do,” said Van Gundy.

“You’re not going to be able to go crazy in terms of adjustments for Game 1 because you don’t have much time,” he said.

While supplies last, single-game tickets for the 2012 Orlando Magic playoffs are available for purchase starting at $10. Order tickets online here or pick them up at the Amway Center box office. You can also go to Ticketmaster outlets, but those are cash only locations.

Pulis, who got a goal in Saturday’s game against Richmond, also talked up the Orlando home-field advantage.

“I thought the atmosphere here was brilliant from the first minute to the last minute they (the fans) made their presence felt, and it makes such a difference to the lads when you got those kind of supporters behind you,” said Pulis.

“A massive thank you to the fans. It’s like having a twelfth man,” he said.

Indeed.
