[Miami, FL] On Thursday, the Justice Department (DOJ) announced that it had launched an investigation into the Miami Police Department (MPD), a reaction to the many allegations of “excessive use of deadly force by firearms” by its officers.
The DOJ’s civil investigation falls under the jurisdiction of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994. Justice is specifically looking to see if MPD officers routinely violate the Constitution or federal law, and what efforts the dept. has made to ensure compliance with federal law.
DOJ asked similar questions of state and local law enforcement agencies in Seattle, Puerto Rico, New Orleans, the District of Columbia and Newark, N.J.
This particular investigation is being handled by attorneys from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida and the Special Litigation Section of the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division.
